If it's your first journey to Bhutan

Most guests arrive with a feeling, not an itinerary, which is just as it should be. Here is the shape a first journey usually takes.

How long

Seven to nine nights is the usual first visit: unhurried, the western valleys without a forced march. Five is the shortest we'd suggest; ten and beyond reaches the central valleys.

Where

The classic arc runs Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, the three western valleys of fortress-dzongs, easy markets and the first high passes. A week or more adds the glacial Gangtey valley; nine nights and beyond reaches Bumthang, the spiritual heartland.

What you'll see

Almost every guest makes the climb to Tiger's Nest, the monastery on the cliff above Paro. Around it: the great dzongs, the Dochula pass at 3,100 metres, and, in winter, the black-necked cranes of Phobjikha.
